Emergency Communications Registered Nurse (ECRN)

ECRNs are State of Illinois licensed providers whom monitor Emergency Medical Services telecommunications from EMTs and Paramedics and acts as a designee of the EMS System Medical Director to provide medical direction to prehospital providers.

Utilizing various types of telecommunications devices, the ECRN guides prehospital providers through various medical emergencies based on East Central Illinois EMS Policy, Procedures and Protocols.

The ECRN course provides emergency department nurses with the necessary knowledge and skills to operate as an ECRN. Our ECRN program consists of 40 hours of synchronous and asynchronous work and 8 hours of prehospital clinical.

Who should take this course?

  • Licensed Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois.
  • Be employed for at least 6 months in an Emergency Department associated with the East Central Illinois EMS System.
  • Current course completion cards in:
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support
    • Basic Life Support
    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support
