If we told you that sleep disorders were a public health epidemic, you would probably call us crazy, but the CDC estimates that 50-70 million Americans suffer from a chronic sleep disorder with the majority going undiagnosed. You probably recharge your smartphone or tablet more than you recharge your body with a good night's sleep.
At OSF Holy Family, we understand the importance of sleep in keeping the body and mind healthy. That's why our Sleep Lab offers sleep testing and treatment right here in Monmouth.
Is a test that records a variety of body functions during sleep, such as electrical activity of the brain, eye movement, muscle activity, heart rate, respiratory effort, air flow and blood oxygen levels. These recordings are used to diagnose sleep disorders, including sleep apnea, and determine the severity of the disorder.
Our trained sleep technologists will show you the equipment that will be used and give you a chance to ask questions.
A Sleep Study Does Not Hurt
The study is non-invasive and not painful. Our staff will apply sensors to your head, face, chest, abdomen and legs to monitor your breathing, heart rate and brain activity while you sleep. However, the presence of the wires and electrodes occasionally affects the sleep of some patients.
If anything feels uncomfortable or if you have experienced skin irritation due to similar testing in the past, please tell your technologist so that adjustments can be made.
We have a camera and microphone that allows the patient to communicate with staff if they have questions or concerns during the study.
