What is Healthy Kids U?
Healthy Kids U partners with children and their families to make healthy lifestyle choices. In addition to focusing on achieving or maintaining a healthy weight, the initiative seeks to positively impact childhood wellness.
This 5-week program is available to children or teens ages 7-13 and their parents or guardians. Through early identification, education and healthy lifestyle changes, we help our participants improve their overall health and wellness.
Our Healthy Kids U panel includes:
- Pediatric Care Team
- Registered Nurses
- Wellness Director
Additional panel experts may be called upon to provide resources, as needed.
What can we expect for the first session?
At the first session, our pediatric care team will meet together with your child and family to give a program overview, including expectations and commitment. The physician and/or nurse practitioner will examine your child. As a family, you will complete a couple health surveys to identify initial program measurements. Together, you can set specific goals that can help your child and family live a healthier lifestyle.
How often will we come to the sessions, and what will be covered?
This program is offered twice a week for five weeks. Each session consists of one part education (held in the gym) and one part activity (held in the gymnasium or Action Arcade) led by a member of our panel. Comfortable clothing and gym shoes are required. Babysitting will be available for children under the age of 7.
How can I help my child or teen in between sessions?
At each session, you and your child or teen will review and reassess goals. As a parent, you can support your child by setting a good example. This means healthy eating, planning healthy meals or snacks for the family, and encouraging physical activity. It is important to work as a partner with your child to strive to meet goals that are set and celebrate successes along the way. If there are any issues that arise between sessions, please call Katie at the number listed above.
The Action Arcade at the Streator Family YMCA was funded in partnership with OSF HealthCare. Designed with childhood wellness in mind, the arcade features specific programs geared toward children ages 7-13.
Equipped with new interactive gaming technology, the Action Arcade allows users to compete against one another or keep personal scores, all while achieving physical activity. Interactive dancing, rowing and punching bag games are among the highlights in addition to a horizontal climbing wall featuring lighted targets.
For more information about the Action Arcade, please call the Streator Family YMCA at (815) 672-2148.
These awesome games are a blast, but they don’t count as exercise just because they are about staying healthy. Have a great time playing them, but remember that you still need to take a break every so often and get your body moving!
