New Patient Safety Initiative Unveiled at OSF Saint Elizabeth

10/04/2013 - Ottawa, Illinois

A new electronic monitoring system goes live this month within the intensive care unit (ICU) at OSF Saint Elizabeth Medical Center.  The new program, called OSF ConstantCare, is an advanced telemedicine solution using eICU remote monitoring technology to enhance the care of critically ill patients.

Through this technology, a specially-trained eICU team of critical care physicians (intensivists), nurses, and other health care professionals can accurately monitor critical care patients from an off-site location, called the eICU Center.  This technology offers patients and their families an extra layer of critical care when it is needed the most.

“OSF ConstantCare will offer increased peace of mind to OSF patients and families as it will provide additional insight from trained critical care specialists looking after patients in our ICUs at all times,” said Dr. William Tillis, the program’s medical director.

The purpose of OSF ConstantCare is to save lives, reduce complications, decrease length of ICU stays and better manage health care costs.  Continuously monitoring critically ill patients allows caregivers to identify subtle changes in conditions sooner, avoiding complications in the process.

Patients who are admitted to the ICU in Ottawa are still cared for by their local physician but will now also receive 24-hour care by intensivists in the Peoria monitoring center who serve as a second set of eyes for local physicians and nurses.  Studies have shown improved outcomes and decreased lengths of stays for patients in ICUs managed by intensivists.

OSF ConstantCare was implemented last June (2012) in Peoria.  OSF Saint Elizabeth is the sixth hospital within OSF HealthCare to begin offering the service.

OSF HealthCare, owned and operated by The Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis, Peoria, Illinois, includes OSF Healthcare System consisting of eight acute care facilities and two colleges of nursing. OSF also has a physician organization, employing more than 640 physicians in various specialties and nearly 300 advanced practitioners who are part of the OSF Medical Group.  OSF HealthCare owns OSF Saint Francis, Inc., comprised of health care-related businesses, and OSF Healthcare Foundation, the philanthropic arm of OSF Healthcare System and OSF Home Care Services.  OSF HealthCare is a multi-state corporation, operating facilities in Illinois and Michigan, providing state-of-the-art, compassionate care to more than 3.5 million people in the communities we serve.
