OSF HealthCare is pleased to welcome Anthony M. Avellino, MD, MBA as CEO of the OSF Neuroscience Clinical Service Line and the Illinois Neurological Institute (INI). Dr. Avellino began his duties with OSF August 18, 2014.
As CEO, Dr. Avellino will oversee the further development of the OSF Neuroscience Clinical Service Line, which includes 16 specialty centers. He will lead the delivery of services across all of OSF Healthcare System and its network of affiliated hospitals.
Dr. Avellino will also work closely with physicians, nurses and other clinical health professionals, focusing on providing the best experience for patients.
Dr. Avellino comes to OSF HealthCare from the University of Washington (UW) where he’s been since 2003, serving most recently as the Director of UW Medicine Neurosciences Institute and Chief of Neurological Surgery at UW Medical Center where he was responsible for the overall operations, evaluation and development of the neurological surgery service including faculty recruitments. Prior to that, Dr. Avellino was the Chief of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Seattle Children’s Hospital from 2007-2009.
Dr. Avellino earned his BS from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, in Microbiology and Biochemistry and his MD from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, New York, NY.
He completed the “Certificate Program in Medical Management” at the University of Washington School of Medicine Department of Health Services, and his MBA through The George Washington University School of Business in Washington, DC.
He is board-certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and the American Board of Pediatric Neurological Surgery.
Dr. Avellino replaces Dr. Patrick Elwood who moved to a new role this past spring as research director of INI after 53 years with OSF HealthCare, the past 13 years as INI CEO. Dr. Daniel Fassett had served as interim CEO since March.
