New Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) Offered Through OSF Gastroenterology

7/09/2014 - Bloomington, Illinois

OSF Gastroenterology is the first medical groups in the area to offer Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) as a minimally invasive outpatient procedure. EUS is a relatively new procedure to evaluate the gastrointestinal tract and adjacent organs. An EUS examination is performed by inserting a small ultrasound probe into a sedated patient’s mouth or rectum. This internal view point provides more detailed pictures of the digestive tract.

The EUS system delivers enhanced imaging resolution compared to conventional ultrasound and allows physicians to take biopsies of the area being examined. This technique is helpful in early diagnosis of small tumors of the digestive organs including the pancreas, which cannot easily be seen with conventional CT scan or MRI. EUS helps in diagnosis of inoperable cancer, prevents additional surgery, and helps improve patient quality of life.

Additionally, EUS allows for faster treatment time and can be managed on an outpatient basis.

“Endoscopic ultrasound gives us the ability to view the GI tract from the inside with greater accuracy, and to sample potential cancerous tissue without external scars or incisions,” said Dr. Omar Khokhar, of OSF Gastroenterology.

EUS is offered by OSF Gastroenterology and performed at the SurgiCenter at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center. OSF Gastroenterology is committed to delivering exceptional medical treatment to patients. In offering Endoscopic Ultrasound, OSF Gastroenterology provides the latest in ultrasound technology.
