The Fall 2015 Hospital Safety Scores were released last month, and Ottawa’s OSF Saint Elizabeth Medical Center topped the list.
The recipient of an “A” grade, OSF Saint Elizabeth received the highest ranking possible from The Leapfrog Group, an independent industry watchdog. Each year, the national nonprofit organization rates how well hospitals protect patients from errors, injuries and infections.
“Our ‘A’ rating is a testament to the hard work of our hospital’s Mission Partners. Each and every day, they are called to serve our patients with the greatest care and love,” said OSF Saint Elizabeth President Ken Beutke.
“One component of that service includes making patients and their quality of care a top priority,” he continued. “By focusing on improving our safety measures and prevention of errors or accidents, we continue to raise the standard of care and our commitment to offering the best possible outcomes.”
Leapfrog publishes letter grades for its Hospital Safety Score twice a year (fall and spring). Developed under the guidance of Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “F” score representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from preventable harm.
The Hospital Safety Score is fully transparent, with a full analysis of the data and methodology used in determining grades available online at www.hospitalsafetyscore.org. The score is free to the public and designed to give consumers information they can use to protect themselves and their families when facing a hospital stay.
About The Leapfrog Group
The Hospital Safety Score is an initiative of The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit organization using the collective leverage of large purchasers of health care to initiate breakthrough improvements in the safety, quality and affordability of health care for Americans. The flagship Leapfrog Hospital Survey allows purchasers to structure their contracts and purchasing to reward the highest performing hospitals. The Leapfrog Group was founded in November 2000 with support from the Business Roundtable and national funders and is now independently operated with support from its purchaser and other members.
