The OSF John & Melissa Besse Rehabilitation Center has more than one reason to celebrate this month. October is national Physical Therapy Month and it also marks the one year anniversary of the new rehabilitation center’s grand opening.
Paul Bracket, Manager of Rehabilitation Services, says, “It has been a great and successful year. Thanks to the new state-of-the-art facility and new services like aquatic therapy, speech therapy and pulmonary rehabilitation, patient visits are up over 25%. The facility also offers athletic/sports training and a new wellness program for injury prevention and improved overall health.”
The expansion of the Pediatric Occupational Therapy program has also resulted in positive outcomes. The new Center features designated areas for pediatric OT where children can learn and excel free from distractions that can be challenging, particularly at the beginning of their therapy.
The updated building design not only provides more privacy and services, but also optimizes work flow and team work among staff. “With all of our therapists and staff working near one another, the needs of our patients, particularly those with stroke or traumatic brain injuries, can be met in one setting,” said Bracket, noting, “it is not uncommon for patients to need all three disciplines – physical, occupational and speech therapy – for their rehabilitation.”
Paul explained, “With our new rehab center, we can truly live our Mission, to serve with the greatest care and love”. He continued, “And because of the growth, we’ve added an additional Physical Therapist, Physical Therapy Assistant and are currently looking to expand our Occupational Therapy area as well”.
The John & Melissa Besse Rehabilitation Center wouldn’t have been possible without the generous donations from the John & Melissa Besse Foundation; the Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis, the OSF Foundation,
OSF Women in Philanthropy, OSF St. Francis Auxiliary, OSF St. Francis Hospital & Medical Group employees, and members of the community.
In honor of Physical Therapy Month, we would like to especially thank all our physical therapists as well as our physical therapy assistants for the work they put in day in and day out. We truly appreciate the passion they have for their careers and the skill, expertise and compassion they bring to our patients.
