OSF Introduces ‘1877 Society’ for Estate Planning

10/12/2015 - Escanaba, Michigan

OSF St. Francis Hospital & Medical Group and OSF Healthcare Foundation have introduced a program to recognize those who support OSF through a gift in their will or estate plan.

Called the “1877 Society” in recognition of the year The Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis began their health care ministry, the program honors those who provide long-term support through a legacy or “planned” gift to ensure the Sisters’ Mission is present for future generations.   Each area of the Sisters’ ministry – including OSF St. Francis Hospital & Medical Group – has a local chapter of the 1877 Society to recognize donors who are supporting their local hospital in this way. Legacy gifts to OSF St. Francis Hospital & Medical Group stay local and will be used to support healthcare in the South/Central Upper Peninsula.

“We understand and appreciate that a planned gift is one of the most personal gifts a person can give,” said Kacie Hanchek, manager of community relations and development at OSF St. Francis. “The 1877 Society is a way for us to honor those who choose to support the Sisters’ Mission and our local hospital in such a purposeful way.”

An 1877 Society reception is being held Friday, October 23, at the home of Dr. Michael and Mickey Connor in Gladstone. Anyone who has intent to include OSF in their will or estate plan is encouraged to contact Hanchek, who noted it is not necessary that estate plans be finalized in order to attend the reception.

“The reception is simply a way to start the conversation about the many different ways a planned gift can work.”

In addition to making a life-changing gift for the future, being a member of the 1877 Society offers other benefits, including:

  • A unique membership pin representing a shared passion for the Sisters’ Mission

  • Invitations to annual 1877 Society receptions

  • Member newsletters with stories, progress updates and creative charitable legacy and planning ideas

  • Invitations to educational events to help keep estate plans current and ensure individuals are meeting both their personal and philanthropic goals.

Additionally, those who express intent to include OSF in their will or estate plan prior to December 31, 2016, will be founding members of the 1877 Society and receive special recognition.
