OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in Top 50 for Cardio Care

2/18/2016 - Bloomington, Illinois

OSF St. Joseph Medical Center has been named one of the nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals by Truven Health Analytics.

The study, now in its 17th year, singled out 50 hospitals that achieved superior clinical outcomes in this critical area of hospital care.

“This recognition is an incredible validation of the excellent work performed by the entire cardiovascular team at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center,” said Dr.Yogesh Agarwal, an Interventional Cardiologist at OSF St. Joseph. “It is truly an honor to be part of such a team."

The Truven Health 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals study measures performance in key performance areas: risk-adjusted mortality, risk-adjusted complications, core measures (a group of measures that assess process of care), percentage of coronary bypass patients with internal mammary artery use, 30-day mortality rates, 30-day readmission rates, severity-adjusted average length of stay, and wage- and severity-adjusted average cost.

“It is appropriate that the award recognizes the combined results of cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, hospitalists, and staff. This truly demonstrates the outstanding quality of care that can be achieved through an integrated team approach to each patient,” said Dr. G. Bradley Smith, a Cardiothoracic Surgeon at OSF St. Joseph.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the OSF St. Joseph Medical Center Heart Surgery Program. Nearly 90 percent of coronary artery bypass surgery cases are done as beating heart surgery – allowing the patient to avoid the heart lung machine.

The Truven study indicates if all cardiovascular providers in the U.S. performed at the level of this year's winners nearly 8,000 additional lives could be saved, nearly 3,500 more heart patients could be complication-free, and more than $1.3 billion could be saved.
