OSF HealthCare Chosen to Build on ACO Success

1/12/2016 - Peoria, Illinois

OSF HealthCare has been selected to participate in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) new accountable care organization (ACO) model called the Next Generation ACO Model (NGACO Model).

OSF HealthCare was selected as a Pioneer ACO in 2011 and will use that experience and the successes learned to help advance the Administration’s goals under the Affordable Care Act. Through the Next Generation ACO Model, OSF HealthCare will partner with CMS and 20 other ACOs that are experienced in coordinating care for populations of patients with multiple complex medical problems and whose provider groups are ready to assume higher levels of financial risk and reward.

Since their start in 2012, Medicare ACOs have grown to 477 nationwide, serving over 8.9 million beneficiaries. Results from the past five years show that as ACOs gain more experience, there is better quality of care with a cost savings.

The NGACO Model is part of the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) efforts to create opportunities for providers to move an increasing percentage of Medicare payments into models paying providers based on the quality rather than the quantity of care provided. It is the goal of HHS to tie 30 percent of traditional, fee-for-service, Medicare payments to alternative payment models, such as ACOs, by the end of 2016, and 50 percent of these payments to the new models by the end of 2018.

“During our participation as a Pioneer ACO, we have seen significant improvement in quality of care, care management, patient satisfaction, and cost savings. We are excited to be selected as a Next Generation ACO so we can keep that momentum going and build on those successes for our patients,” said Kevin Schoeplein, CEO, OSF Healthcare System. “We are pleased that the focus on improved care coordination has produced significant benefits in the communities that OSF serves. Our work as a Pioneer ACO, as well as other relationships with governmental and commercial payers, helps in our goal of transforming the way health care is delivered in our communities.”

OSF HealthCare and the other 20 NGACO Model participants represent a variety of provider organizations and geographic regions, and were selected through an open and competitive process from a large applicant pool which had to fulfill specific eligibility criteria.
