New Educational Assistance Program Unveiled at OSF Saint Elizabeth

2/24/2017 - Ottawa, Illinois

Students seeking careers in health care can earn money toward tuition as part of a new educational assistance program offered by OSF Saint Elizabeth Medical Center. Designed to support high school seniors and college students living within LaSalle County, the program offers up to $5,000 annually to its recipients.

“Since 1995, the OSF Saint Elizabeth Foundation has awarded over $100,000 in scholarships to high school seniors from a number of area schools,” said Ken Beutke, hospital president.  “And although that format supported a large number of graduates, we felt it was time to revamp the structure of our program to better serve the needs of both students and our organization.”

Further explaining how OSF worked to reimagine its vision for funding education, Beutke said one of their goals was to address concerns of a possible workforce shortage within the health care industry. Unlike the previous scholarship program, the new format places more emphasis on recruiting and retaining talent locally.

“In exchange for tuition assistance, award recipients will be asked to invest their skills into the community by returning to work within the hospital or one of our local clinics,” he said. “By directing our resources for educational assistance more strategically, we help to ensure that caregivers are available in the future.”

The hospital’s program will continue to rely on support from their Foundation. In addition, the OSF Saint Elizabeth Auxiliary – its fundraising body – will also lend financial backing to the project. Both organizations are supportive of the change and look forward to helping students who are willing to serve the local health care community.

Students applying for educational assistance must meet various requirements and be able to submit a number of supporting documents to be eligible for consideration.  Applicants will also be required to attend an interview to further discuss their health care interest and review their achievements.

More information about the educational assistance program, including the online application, is available by clicking here. The deadline to apply is March 31.
