OSF-Offered Diet Plan Honored for Proven Results

1/12/2017 - Peoria, Illinois

A diet plan available in central Illinois through OSF HealthCare is making national headlines for its proven results.

The Health Management Resources program (HMR) has been named a Best Weight-Loss Diet in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Diets of 2017 Rankings. This is the third year in a row HMR has been included in the annual rankings list. This year it won two awards, one for fastest weight loss (ranked #1) and a second for general weight loss (ranked #4).

The specialized diet is offered at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington, and OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford.

Meta Rask is the Medical Exercise Supervisor at the OSF Weight Loss Center in Peoria. She says HMR's long term behavioral approach is the key to its success.

“The program focuses on learning the importance of moderation,” said Rask. “HMR helps patients develop skills by increasing fruits and vegetables.  The program supports participants by adding accountability and education weekly.  HMR also incorporates exercise into patients’ daily routine and gives them a chance to do things outside their comfort zone.”

HMR participants get the constant support of health experts who believe a diet should promote healthy lifestyle changes. This makes weight loss easier to maintain.

“The HMR program at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center stands out from other programs because of the education received during the group classes and the level of medical supervision if needed for individual patients,” says Nathan Hamman, Manager of Wellness and Weight Management at OSF Saint Anthony. “Our groups are taught by trained and degreed experts in nutrition, exercise and health education. We coach participants to learn to make healthy habits part of their everyday life.”

“The educational component of HMR makes our program unique compared to others, as we teach patients to explore new healthy behaviors with high levels of problem solving,” said Jill Lynch, Weight Management Specialist at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center. “Over the course of the program, patients are developing strategies on how to lead a healthier lifestyle in today’s society.  The daily habits that caused them to gain weight become a part of the past and their new healthier lifestyle becomes a daily routine.”

The meal replacement diet can be followed at home or under medical supervision in a clinic. Under HMR, dieters can choose low-calorie shakes, soups, nutrition bars and multi-grain cereal. Another plus, according to U.S. News reviewers, the HMR diet provides a quick-start option and convenience of meals delivered to a dieter.

HMR’s proven methods are based on more than 30 years of weight-loss coaching experience. It uses learning techniques designed specifically to create diet programs that are both effective and easy to stick to. This helps users develop new skills and habits they can use for the rest of their lives. So says Sheila Bond.

“A year ago I finally decided that I needed to focus on getting myself into shape,” says Bond. “In just 9 months I lost 60 pounds and a total of 44-1/2 inches, plus I was down 8 pant sizes. The HMR program and the staff at OSF have been great.”
