A registered nurse and a radiology mammography technologist were two recent recipients of the DAISY and Sunflower Awards offered by OSF HealthCare. Both caregivers were honored during a brief ceremony held in late June.
Ted Nofer, RN, BSN, of Streator was given the DAISY Award which recognizes exceptional nurses nationwide on behalf of the DAISY Foundation. Nofer has been employed at OSF HealthCare Saint Elizabeth Medical Center since 2016 and works within the emergency department.
A patient who was given a second chance at life thanks to Nofer’s efforts submitted his name for the award and is now making healthy lifestyle changes to show his gratitude. An excerpt from the nomination reads, “I was in cardiac arrest and you took charge, kept me focused, and brought me back after I left for a while. You calmed my family and assured me I would be okay.”
The Sunflower Award, a recognition program offered to non-nursing staff with OSF HealthCare, was given to Kelli Dewalt of Ottawa. Dewalt has been employed with the hospital since 1994 and currently works within the hospital’s diagnostic imaging department.
A mammography patient who had anxiety about her upcoming exam following a previous bout with breast cancer credits Dewalt with being “comforting and compassionate” as she awaited her results. The nomination also offered the following note, “When they returned and said everything looked good, I just broke down and cried. Kelli hugged me and helped me to relax. What a wonderful loving experience I had. I was so blessed to have her take care of me.”
OSF HealthCare encourages patients, family members and fellow staff to recognize caregivers who have provided exceptional care and service by nominating them for an award to honor their dedication. For more information about the DAISY and Sunflower Awards, or to submit a nomination, click here.
