A number of upcoming events have been announced at OSF HealthCare locations in Ottawa and Streator.

OSF HealthCare to Host Two Upcoming Blood Drives
Two American Red Cross blood drives are scheduled at OSF HealthCare facilities in late May and early June. On Wednesday, May 24, a blood drive will take place from 7:15 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. at OSF Saint Elizabeth Medical Center in Ottawa.  A second blood drive is scheduled from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at OSF Center for Health – Streator on Friday, June 9.

Walk-in donors are welcome, but appointments are encouraged.  Those interested in donating blood are reminded to eat a healthy meal and drink plenty of water prior to donating.  Donors are also instructed to bring a valid photo ID.

Sports Physicals to Benefit Local Schools
OSF HealthCare is set to offer one-day sports physical clinics at Ottawa and Streator Township High Schools. Students in need of a physical prior to participating in athletics this coming school year are encouraged to attend.

A team of OSF physicians, athletic trainers, nurses and clinical support will staff the clinics on Tuesday, May 30 in Ottawa and Thursday, June 1 in Streator.  Both clinics will run from 1-5 p.m. on their scheduled dates.

Walk-in participants are welcome, but appointments are encouraged. A fee of $25, cash or check, will be collected upon arrival with all proceeds being donated back to each school’s respective booster club.  Last year’s inaugural event netted over $1400 to each school.

Diabetes Education Offered
A series of three classes offering diabetic education are scheduled at OSF Saint Elizabeth Medical

Center throughout the month of June.  The complimentary sessions will run from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Monday evenings, June 12, 19 & 26.

Each session features a different focus ranging from an overview of diabetes and how to use your glucometer to identifying carbohydrate foods and determining portion size.  The staff at OSF Saint Elizabeth will also answer questions and offer guidelines for avoiding complications with diabetes.

The Diabetes Education Series is held quarterly and is open to anyone who may have been newly diagnosed with diabetes or is simply looking for more information.  Friends and family members are also welcome.  Advance registration is requested.  For more information or to register, call (815) 431-5499.

Babysitting Skills Taught this June
Back to back sessions of Safe Sitter®, a babysitting class geared toward children ages 11 and up, will be held June 14-15 at OSF HealthCare locations in Ottawa and Streator. Scheduled from 8:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. each day, the class teaches would-be sitters basic child care skills (diapering, feeding, etc.), babysitting business skills, what to do in an emergency and more.

Cost of the Safe Sitter® class is $40.00 which includes a morning snack, lunch and a Safe Sitter® Kit. To register a child for the Wednesday, June 14 class at OSF Saint Elizabeth Medical Center or the Thursday, June 15 class at OSF Center for Health – Streator, please call (815) 431-5499.

Healthy You Program Winners Announced
More than 50 teams comprised of 251 total participants took part in Healthy You, a 12-week weight-loss challenge that kicked off in January. The program was offered as a collaboration between several local OSF HealthCare facilities and the Ottawa and Streator YMCAs.

The program encouraged participants to join teams and engage in a friendly battle to lose the highest percentage of body weight. Final numbers were recently tallied, resulting in more than 2,300 pounds lost. Several weight-loss winners were awarded prizes for their efforts.

The top individual award went to Deon Gotch of Streator.  Coming in second and third respectively were Brian Marisko and Laura Clift, also of Streator.  First, second and third place team awards went to Tom’s Team, Worth the Weight and 4 Roses & a Thorn.
