Galesburg, IL – September 8, 2017 - OSF HealthCare St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg recently received sleep program accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).

“The American Academy of Sleep Medicine congratulates OSF HealthCare St. Mary Sleep on meeting the high standards required to earn accreditation as a sleep disorders center,” said Dr. Ilene M. Rosen, AASM president. “OSF HealthCare St. Mary Sleep is an important resource to the local medical community and will provide academic and scientific value in addition to the highest quality care for patients suffering from sleep disorders.”

To receive accreditation, a sleep center must meet or exceed all standards for professional health care as designated by the AASM.  These standards address core areas such as personnel, facility and equipment, policies and procedures, data acquisition, patient care, and quality assurance.  Additionally, the sleep center’s goals must be clearly stated and include plans for positively affecting the quality of medical care in the community it serves.

“Sleep disorders are present in people of all ages and affect their physical and mental health and overall wellness,” said Patricia Baltisberger, Director of Cardiopulmonary/Sleep. “We at OSF HealthCare St. Mary Sleep are proud to have earned this accreditation with the goal to serve our community in offering excellence in sleep diagnostics for an improved quality of life.”

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine accredited a sleep disorders center for the first time in 1977.  Today there are more than 2,500 AASM-accredited sleep centers across the country.

“I am so thankful that OSF St. Mary can offer the services of an accredited Sleep Center to our patients,” said Roxanna Crosser, President of OSF St. Mary. “This is an excellent resource that we can provide for our patients suffering from sleep disorders.”

OSF HealthCare St. Mary Sleep is directed by Kaninika Verma, MD, and is located at 3333 N Seminary St.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine is a professional medical society for clinicians, researchers, and other health care providers in the field of sleep medicine. As the national accrediting body for sleep disorders centers, the AASM improves sleep health and promotes high quality, patient-centered care through advocacy, education, strategic research, and practice standards.
