OSF HealthCare St. Mary Medical Center is now offering walk-in screening mammograms for women 40 years of age and older. Screening mammograms are a preventative test that check for signs of breast cancer in women who don't have any symptoms or previous abnormal mammograms.
“We are pleased to begin offering walk-in screening mammography as a convenience to our patients,” said Mary Mowen, Director of Imaging. “All women juggle many obligations these days. Sometimes it is just easier to work in the important things in life rather than having to schedule ahead. An annual screening mammography for women age 40 and over is one of those important things!”
Mammography is the most important tool in the early detection of breast cancer. A mammogram is an x-ray exam of the breast and is performed to detect and identify abnormalities of the breast that appear in the form of breast lumps, calcifications, fluid-filled cysts and cancer. All of our mammograms are read by a group of board certified radiologists.
The walk-in screenings are available from 12 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. every Wednesday. Please register at the registration desk in the lobby. Walk-in times are for screening exams only (no symptoms like breast pain or a lump) and it should be at least 1 year since the last screening exam was completed.
OSF St. Mary uses 3-D tomosynthesis processing that is an important standard of care in mammography. Please check with your insurance provider ahead of time for coverage availability.
