OSF HealthCare Children’s Hospital of Illinois, as part of the Children’s Hospitals’ Solutions for Patient Safety (SPS), has been recognized as a John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety and Quality Award winner by The Joint Commission and the National Quality Forum.
Children’s Hospitals’ SPS was honored for its focus on advancing the culture of safety across a network of more than 130 children’s hospitals nationwide, sparing an estimated nearly 10,000 children from harm while hospitalized. Members of the network share data about 11 types of potential patient harm such as surgical site infections, catheter-associated urinary tract infections, adverse drug events, and pressure injuries and falls.
In addition to working with senior leadership in their hospitals, they engage patients’ families in their work to identify leading practices. Participants have reported sustainable change in their organizations through the collective efforts of the network, including an improved safety culture at the organizational level.
“Our mission at OSF HealthCare is about serving with the greatest care and love, and our primary goal at OSF Children’s Hospital is to provide high quality care that is the safest for our children; to provide care with zero preventable harm,” said Cassy Horack, Vice President of Quality & Safety. “Through SPS we have the opportunity to work together with children’s hospitals across the nation, collaborating in many different ways. Being in healthcare, we are constantly learning, so through SPS we can learn together with one common goal of providing the highest quality, safest care to all the children in our community and the region.”
The patient safety awards program, launched in 2002, honors the late Dr. John M. Eisenberg, former administrator of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). Dr. Eisenberg was an impassioned advocate for health care quality improvement and led AHRQ’s grant program to support patient safety research. The achievements of all award recipients will be featured in the July 2018 issue of The Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety.
