OSF HealthCare donation addressing obesity with area 5th-grade students. L to R - Northlawn Junior High School Principal, Bob Ketcham, accepts 145, 5-2-1-0 kits on behalf of his 5th-grade students from Lindsey Pyszka, OSF Saint Elizabeth Community Health

OSF HealthCare Center for Health - Streator and OSF HealthCare Children's Hospital of Illinois is pleased to announce the donation of 5-2-1-0 kits to 5th-grade students in Grand Ridge, Ransom and Streator. "The 5-2-1-0 framework targets four areas that directly relate to addressing childhood obesity through a message that is easy for children to understand," said Ellen Vogel, Community Health Engagement Program Manager for the OSF Center for Health-Streator. The framework suggests the following healthy behaviors:

1.         Consume 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables daily
2.         Limit screen time to 2 hours or less daily
3.         Participate in physical activity for 1 hour or more daily
4.         Consume 0 sugar-sweetened beverages

We know that there are additional barriers and challenges to meeting these guidelines given the current COVID-19 pandemic. For that reason, OSF HealthCare Children's Hospital of Illinois has created a 5-2-1-0 kit for students that includes activities and recipes to be completed at home which encourages healthy behaviors. In this kit, the student found the following:

  • 5:  An OSF Smart Meal that features two different fruits to help get the recommended 5 servings of fruits and vegetables each day is included. To increase the servings of fruits/vegetables in the meal, the Tooty-Fruity Chicken Pasta can be served over spinach as a salad.
  • 2:  To help kids cut excessive screen time from their daily routines, we have included a deck of playing cards with instructions for family-friendly card games. The kit also features a STEAM
  • (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) spoon catapult activity, shared with us by the Children's Discovery Museum in Normal, IL.
  • 1:  To help kids get up and get moving, we have included a jump rope and a pair of dice. The dice are paired with instructions to two Roll the Dice games that match an exercise with the number rolled.
  • 0:  A reusable water bottle and a recipe card for infused water are included to encourage water consumption while decreasing the amount of sugar-sweetened beverages consumed.

"We know the importance that these behaviors play in a child's health and wellness and we truly hope that the students enjoyed the activities included in these 5-2-1-0 kits," said Vogel.
