OSF HealthCare Saint Luke Medical Center is pleased to recognize the 2022 DAISY Award winner, Becky Palmer, RN, BSN, of Kewanee. Becky is a registered nurse at OSF Medical Group in Kewanee. She also received the DAISY Award for OSF Medical Group in the Western Region. Becky was recognized for the extraordinary compassion, empathy and kindness she shared with a patient and her family.

A patient's daughter expressed gratitude to Becky for her patience and the compassion she showed at their recent visit. Becky held the patient's hand and comforted her during a procedure. She then explained the discharge paperwork, assisted the patient through registration for labs, again comforting her and holding her hand during the lab draw. The patient has Alzheimer's and her family thought she would have a hard time during the visit, procedure and blood draw, but Becky made the experience pleasant for the patient and family.

“The DAISY Award is a prestigious recognition that allows us to celebrate and recognize outstanding nursing care delivered in our primary care practice and local hospital,” said Holly Hicks, site director of OSF Medical Group in Kewanee.

The DAISY Award program can be found in over 2,000 health care facilities in all 50 states and 14 other countries. An acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System, The DAISY Foundation was formed in November 1999, by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died at age 33 of complications of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). During Pat’s eight-week hospitalization, his family experienced the best in nursing care and compassion provided not only to Pat but to everyone in his family. One of the goals they set in creating a foundation in Pat’s memory was to recognize extraordinary nurses and to thank them for the gifts nurses give their patients and families every day, just as they had experienced.

The DAISY Award winner receives an award pin, certificate, “Healing Touch” statue, bouquet of daisies and a banner displayed in their department for the year.

From the nominations for the DAISY Award, a committee from OSF Saint Luke selects one recipient annually. To recognize an employee who has provided exceptional care, submit a nomination to honor their dedication at osfhealthcarefoundation.org/nominate-a-nurse.
