Debra Smalley, PA-C, grew up just outside of Chicago in Bolingbrook, Illinois, which makes Rockford a great fit for her because both cities are home to diverse cultures and several different types of cuisine. “I like to be in a place where there is always something more to discover,” she said.
Living in Rockford also allows her to be near family and friends – a bonus for somebody as family-oriented as Debra. She also enjoys working for OSF HealthCare, which takes seriously its Mission to serve with the greatest care and love.
“OSF HealthCare is a dedicated health system that truly focuses on the experience of the patient,” Debra said. “This is refreshing in light of the more common goals of large health care systems being profit and prestige.”
Debra has always been fascinated by the science of medicine, and she enjoys working with people, so entering the health care field always seemed like the right fit. She chose to get into family medicine because it allows her to work with patients from a large range of age groups. She gets to follow patients as they age, build a trusting relationship and help ensure a continuity of care for them.
Debra’s focus is health maintenance and preventative care. She emphasizes partnering with her patients to maintain a healthy lifestyle, with the goal of preventing issues from arising. “The idea is to utilize evidence-based medicine to identify possible risks and illness BEFORE serious complications occur,” she said.
“During appointments, you can expect a thorough review of your medical history, current conditions and management plans,” Debra said. “We will discuss any problems you are having at the time, and ensure that your questions and concerns are addressed. Together we will come up with a treatment plan that we are both comfortable with.”
In her free time, Debra enjoys hiking and running. She also believes volunteer work is an important aspect of being part of a community.
