Dr. Jones’ first love of science was actually chemistry. After completing his undergraduate program in biochemistry, he was interested in the chemistry of biological systems. “Medicine was just a natural transition from there as I learned more about underlying chemistry as it relates to disease processes.”
He decided to go into family medicine following his last clinical rotation in community medicine during medical school. “It covered multiple medical problems. Family medicine, to me, is practicing community medicine with its multiple disease processes,” he said. “What I enjoy is being able to treat different cases at a time, and learning the new treatment trends that benefit patients.”
Dr. Jones’ approach to patient care has always been to put the patient in charge of the direction of their care.
“After being made aware of treatment recommendations, it is good to give patients the options available to direct their care,” he said. “This gives the patient autonomy as well as comfort, and it reduces their anxieties.”
When meeting with a patient during an appointment, Dr. Jones concentrates on how they are feeling that day compared to their previous visits. “I’m interested in their quality of life and how treatment is affecting it – can they work, go to school, sleep well, or are they having side effects from medicines.”
Dr. Jones and his wife, Renata, have an adult daughter and a son in high school. When he’s not working he enjoys photography and herb gardening. The family also has a love for animals. “We adopted two dogs from the Macon County Animal Shelter and we also enjoy guinea pigs and tropical fish.”
Dr. Jones also serves as a board member for a halfway house for girls who are wards of the state of Illinois.
