Outpatient Ostomy Services
Outpatient Ostomy Services at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center include nurses who have specialized education in the field of Wound, Ostomy, Continence Nursing.
These WOC Nurses help individuals manage ostomies (colostomy, ileostomy, and urostomy), fistulas and/ or skin issues.
What is an ostomy?
An ostomy is a surgically created opening called a stoma that allows waste products to pass out of the body. An ostomy allows stool or urine to bypass an injured or diseased part of the large or small intestine or urinary tract, which helps promote healing. The waste products normally drain into a pouch attached to the skin.
Patients with ostomies can live active, full and satisfying lives. Our services are designed to provide the following:
- Pre- and post-operative consultation and education
- Counseling
- Measuring for hernia belts
- Evaluation and treatment of peristomal complications
- Stoma site marking

Our nurses are certified by the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society Certification Board. Founded in 1968, the Wound, Ostomy Continence Nurses Society is a professional, international nursing society of more than 5,000 health care professionals who are experts in the care of patients with wound, ostomy and incontinence.

Missy is the Clinical Coordinator of the OSF Saint Francis Medical Center Ostomy Wound Team. Missy graduated from MacMurray College in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing and has over 28 years of nursing experience. Missy has worked at OSF HealthCare her entire nursing career, initially working with surgical and trauma patients and joined the OSF Ostomy Wound Team in 2003. “I am inspired on a daily basis by the strength and courage of people with ostomies, and I am grateful to be able to assist them in their recovery and success.”

Debbie is an acute care wound/ostomy nurse with more than 20 years experience caring for wound and ostomy conditions. She received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Mennonite College of Nursing, and completed the Cleveland Clinic Wound/Ostomy/Continence nursing program in Cleveland, Ohio. Debbie is an active member of the national and local WOCN Society and the Peoria Area Chapter Ostomy Support Group. A career in wound/ostomy cares has provided her a constant challenge throughout the years, and she enjoys most getting to know and care for her patients and their family.

Lisa earned a Bachelor of Science degree in exercise physiology from Arizona State University. She studied nursing at Gateway College in Phoenix, AZ and was granted her registered nursing degree. Lisa worked as a nurse in the cardiovascular intensive care unit before moving to the Midwest with her family. She worked several years in home health care as well as in an assisted living facility as a nurse manager. During these roles, she developed a passion for wound and ostomy care. Because of this, she pursued education and professional certification in ostomy and wound care. She was able to fulfill a lifelong quest of caring for people in this challenging field.

Nathan is a wound and ostomy nurse at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center and has been working at this institution since 2015. Nathan graduated from Bradley University in Peoria, IL with his BSN in 2016. He then progressed to get his wound and ostomy certification (CWON) in 2018 from Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland OH.

Melissa graduated from Bradley University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2013. Melissa worked at Memorial Hospital in Springfield after graduating and then went on to travel nursing for 3 years. She came to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in 2017, initially working with surgical and trauma patients. She became a member of the OSF Ostomy Wound Team in September of 2019 and completed the Wound Ostomy certification program from Emory University. She enjoys caring for a diverse group of patients and helping them through difficult times.

Anna graduated from Indiana Bethel University in 2014 and completed the Cleveland Clinic Wound/Ostomy nursing certification program in 2019. Her entire career has been at OSF Healthcare as a General Medical/Surgical RN and Wound/Ostomy RN. She enjoys encouraging patients and helping them to take care of themselves.

Keisha is a patient wound/ostomy care assistant with more than 20 years of experience in healthcare. Keisha received her nursing assistant certificate from Illinois Central College. She has been at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center for 15 years. She was previously an assistant manager for a retirement/assisted living facility. Keisha thoroughly enjoys putting forth what she has learned in her career towards assisting her patients and developing a relationship with those she is caring for.
