Frequently Asked Questions

We are here to provide an excellent patient experience. For more information on any of the questions below and beyond, contact our Surgical Services Department at (309) 852-7970.

Insurance

  • How do I know if my insurance is accepted at your hospital?

  • It is important to check with your insurance provider to find out if our hospital is on the list for your particular insurance.

You may always contact Patient Financial Services at OSF Saint Luke Medical Center for assistance with this task at (309) 852-7765.

  • How much will it cost to have my procedure/surgery done at OSF Saint Luke Medical Center?

  • Please call (309) 852-7765 and ask for pricing assistance for your procedure/surgery.

Before your procedure

  • Will I need to have anything done before my procedure/surgical date?

  • Labs, X-rays and other testing are ordered for many of our patients to make sure your body is prepared and stable for surgery at our facility.

It is very important to get these tests done before the day of your surgery when asked to do so in order to make sure you are prepared and to avoid delays.

  • What is the prep for a colonoscopy?

  • Each prep for colonoscopies depends on the surgeon conducting the procedure. You will need to check with your provider to see what he or she has ordered for you to take as a prep for the procedure.

Patient Experience

  • Am I allowed to bring my family with me or someone for support?

  • We require you to have a responsible adult with you on the day of your procedure/surgery.

Your family or support person will be able to come to the private patient room after you have been admitted to our department and remain with you during recovery.

If you do not have a responsible person available for a planned surgery, your procedure will need to be rescheduled until someone is available.

  • How long will I be in the hospital?

  • Most of the procedures/surgeries done at our facility are outpatient procedures, which means you will go home the same day. In most cases, you will be asked to come in an hour and a half before the time your surgery is scheduled to start.

The amount of time you need to stay after you are done with your procedure/surgery depends on how well you wake up and recover from your anesthesia.

Please ask to speak with a nurse to determine how long you will stay, dependent on your procedure/surgery.

After the procedure

  • What happens after I go home?

  • You will receive discharge instructions before you leave our department.

The phone number of your doctor will be listed for you to call if you have any problems at home while recovering. We encourage you to reach out to your doctor for questions or concerns during recovery.

A nurse from the surgical department will also contact you after your procedure/surgery to see if you have any concerns and to ask you about the care you received at OSF Saint Luke Medical Center.

You may always reach out to the surgical department if you are not sure who to call and we will help you get to where you need to be (309) 852-7970 (please see hours of operation).

  • How do I know when I should call the doctor for problems that come up after surgery?

  • Be sure to call your physician or surgeon if you develop any of the following:

    • Persistent fever over 101 degrees F (39 C)
    • Bleeding
    • Swelling
    • Pain that is not relieved by your medications
    • Persistent nausea or vomiting
    • Inability to urinate
    • Chills
    • Persistent cough or shortness of breath
    • Foul smelling drainage (pus) from any incision
    • Redness surrounding any of your incisions that is worsening or getting bigger
    • You are unable to eat or drink liquids

If you are having any problem that you are unsure about, please call your doctor/surgeon to review.

General Information

  • Do you accept walk-ins for outpatient services?

  • In order to provide our patients’ excellent quality of care, we run our department on a scheduled appointment basis to make sure we have enough staff to care for each of our patients.

If a patient is in need of outpatient services on the same day that the order is given from the doctor, please contact Central Scheduling at (309) 852-7550 to be added to the outpatient schedule.

You will need to have the doctor order to be added to the schedule.
