Emergency Services

OSF provides emergency care at all of our hospitals and medical centers, three of those having been designated by the State of Illinois as Level I or Level II trauma centers.

A Level I Trauma Center offers the most sophisticated care and must be staffed 24 hours a day by an in-house general or trauma surgeon. Specialty surgical services, such as neurosurgery, reimplantation and ophthalmologic, must be available within 30 minutes. OSF Saint Francis Medical Center (Peoria) and OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center (Rockford) both maintain the Level I Trauma Center designation.

According to Illinois regulations, Level II Trauma Centers are required to have a general or trauma surgeon available within 30 minutes and some surgical services available within 60 minutes. Other surgical services must be available either within 60 minutes or the trauma center must have a transfer agreement with another hospital. OSF St. Joseph Medical Center (Bloomington) is a designated Level II Trauma Center.

Emergency Departments across OSF and throughout central and northern Illinois are well connected through OSF Life Flight, the busiest air medical service in Illinois. OSF Life Flight performs over 2,200 inter-hospital transfers and transfers of critically injured patients from scenes of emergencies each year.
