TMJ

OSF Rehabilitation provides treatment for temporal mandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction due to jaw injuries or disease.

The TMJ is two sliding hinges that connect your jawbone to your skull. TMJ disorders can cause pain in your jaw and in the muscles that control jaw movement. Therapy may help relieve pain and increase jaw mobility for ease in eating and speaking.

In most cases, the pain and discomfort associated with TMJ disorders is temporary and can be relieved with self-managed care or corrected with therapy.

Who Is It For?

Patients who may benefit from TMJ include those experiencing:

  • Jaw muscle stiffness
  • A displaced disc, dislocated or injured jaw
  • Arthritis
  • Radiating pain in the face, jaw or neck
  • Limited movement or locking jaw

What Does TMJ Therapy Involve?

OSF Rehabilitation physical therapists will develop a unique treatment plan that may include one or more of the following:

  • Relaxation techniques
  • Heat and ice therapy
  • Ultrasound
  • Training to improve posture and correct jaw alignment.

The treatments are designed to not only correct, but provide you with techniques to manage your TMJ symptoms.

The main goal is to treat the TMJ while avoiding the need for surgery.

Preparing for TMJ Therapy

You will need a physician’s referral to set up an initial evaluation appointment.

Please bring your insurance card and a photo ID, and wear loose fitting clothing.

Arrive about 15 minutes prior to your scheduled visit.

The first visit, the initial evaluation, may take a little longer, probably 45 minutes to an hour. This gives the therapist time to talk to you and take baseline measurements as well as get you started on treatment and a home exercise program.
