Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Pulmonary rehabilitation at OSF St. Francis involves a team consisting of a board certified pulmonologist, physical therapists and an exercise physiologist.

Together the team offers a multi-phase approach to teaching patients about chronic lung disease and providing a structured, supervised exercise program.

The goal is to help patients:

  • learn more about their disease process and how the lungs work
  • learning proper breathing techniques
  • reduce stress
  • build physical endurance
  • increase confidence
  • follow a healthy diet and exercise program
  • quit smoking if they smoke
  • improve ability to perform activities of daily living
  • reduce the need for hospitalization

Three Phases

Phase 1

Includes 4 visits with the respiratory therapist. Exercise therapy and education is provided, with instruction on home activity as well. Phase I is usually covered by insurance.

Phase 2

Includes another 4 visits of exercise therapy, two days a week with the exercise physiologist.  During exercise, the patient's heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen saturation levels are monitored to keep track of your improvement. Progress reports are reported to the patient's primary care physician on a regular basis. Phase 2 is usually covered by insurance. Following an assessment at the end of Phase 2, patients may have the option to continue for another 4 weeks.

Phase 3

Following completion of Phase 2, patients may take advantage of our Step-down Wellness Center. A self-pay program with monthly, bi-annual or annual rates, the Wellness Center features cardiac equipment, including:

  • treadmills
  • ellipticals
  • stationary bikes
  • weight equipment

A physical therapist, exercise physiologist or athletic trainer are available to assist patients when needed.
