The Pulmonary Rehabilitation program at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center offers specialized rehabilitation for patients who have pulmonary diseases.
Our program incorporates exercise and educational classes to assist those with chronic lung conditions in maintaining a healthier lifestyle.
Through exercise and education, patients will improve lung function, become more active, and reduce shortness of breath.

What Does it Involve?
This phase of pulmonary rehabilitation is for inpatients (hospitalized patients) only and requires a physician’s order. A Respiratory Therapist will walk with the patient and monitor their oxygen needs. The goal of phase one is to increase patient endurance.
This phase is for outpatients (patients not hospitalized) only and requires a physician’s order. Patients will have a pulmonary evaluation completed by a Respiratory Therapist. Patients will attend exercise classes twice a week for twelve weeks (24 sessions) for an hour and will work with various exercise equipment.
This phase is outpatient only and does not require a physician’s order. This requires a monthly fee, paid for by the patient, and is not covered by insurance. Ongoing outpatients are supervised during an exercise program combined with Cardiac Rehabilitation.
Preparing for Your Therapy
- Patients must wear comfortable clothing and continue all medication prescribed by their physician. Plan to bring all rescue inhalers to each session.
- A physician’s order is required for enrollment into Phase One and Phase Two. Each patient is responsible for verifying insurance eligibility.
- Pulmonary rehabilitation sessions for Phase Two are on Tuesdays and Thursdays by appointment only. Phase Three sessions are combined with Cardiac Rehabilitation on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Walk-ins are welcome in Phase Three. Each session is one hour.
