Aquatic Therapy

Aquatic therapy photo OSF St. Mary Medical Center Health and Rehabilitation Services has a 15 foot by 20 foot indoor, multi depth, warm water therapeutic pool.

Aquatic therapy relies on the unique properties of water to enhance rehabilitation. These physical properties include, buoyancy, relative density, hydrostatic pressure, viscosity and surface tension.

The purpose of aquatic therapy is to improve cardiovascular efficiency, increase strength and power, increase joint range of motion, assist in gait training and functional activities, reduce pain and muscle spasm and increase proprioceptive and kinesthetic awareness.

Benefits of aquatic therapy for the patient include the unloading of joints, assist or resist movement, improve cardiac efficiency (increases venous return to increase cardiac output) and increases lung perfusion.

Aquatics therapy at OSF St. Mary includes skilled treatment with a referral from a physician. Skilled treatment is billed through insurance.
