Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Dr. Barteau has always been fascinated by science – trying to discover how things work and what is wrong when they don’t. This inclination led him to a career in surgery, where he relishes the opportunity to identify a problem, fix it and restore a person back to health.

“I understand that people are frequently frightened coming to a surgeon, and that their minimum hope is to have their problem fixed with a good outcome and no complications,” Dr. Barteau said. “When their treatment is completed, my goal is to have alleviated their fear and exceeded that hope.

“I strive to learn as much of their medical situation before their initial visit, so we can spend time on more than just the medical details, and I can educate them on their problem and what to expect.”

He has lived in Rockford for nearly 25 years. He loves the proximity to big cities while enjoying the more relaxed environment and open spaces of the region. He and his wife, Dawn, have three grown children.

In his free time, he enjoys cooking, hiking, travel and rooting for the St. Louis Cardinals.
