Dr. Harrigan grew up in San Luis Obispo, California, a place he describes as having a small-town feel with the amenities of a big city. He came to Peoria four years ago to complete residencies in internal medicine and pediatrics with the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria in conjunction with OSF HealthCare.

“I fell in love with my co-workers here and they kind of adopted me,” Dr. Harrigan said.

He started in medicine by working in the Emergency Medical Services field with the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Department. “I originally started going to EMT classes with my cousin and uncle and I ended up loving it. I furthered my knowledge in EMS and was able to work in that realm during my undergraduate years while I pondered the idea of going to medical school,” Dr. Harrigan said. “I finally decided to go to medical school when I realized I was not fulfilling my full potential.”

Originally, he was going to concentrate in pediatrics, but came across the internal medicine/pediatrics specialty while applying for residencies.

“I did some research on the specialty, and it was for me,” he said. “I really like pediatrics, but still enjoyed internal medicine, and it was the perfect fit.”

With patients, Dr. Harrigan likes to work as a team.

“I like to discuss their options in regards to therapy and recommendations so that they feel involved in their care,” he said. “I tend to allow them to talk about what is bothering them so they feel like their voice is being heard.”

When not working, Dr. Harrigan enjoys being outside as the Eagle Scout isn’t “much of a fan of sitting around inside.”

He enjoys all sports, “but baseball takes the cake.”
