Clinical Decision Unit
The Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) is a six bed unit for selected Observation status patients. This is the recommendation of a multidisciplinary performance improvement team to address out long length of stay for Observation status patients, and the need to expedite patient discharges to accommodate the needs of the
Emergency Department
.
This team included input from Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Pulmonary, Surgery and Neurology.
Patients admitted into the Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) will meet strict admission criteria for a small number of diagnoses. Nurses will be dedicated to theses beds only. The unit hopes to effect a quick turnaround time with an expected stay of 18 hours or less.
Patients will be managed by our hospitalist group so that they can be seen rapidly upon admission for the Emergency Department. If a patient is determined to need a change in status to inpatient, then the patient will be transferred out of the CDU and will be transferred to the care of there primary care physician.
