Although many of us first think of adults and probably seniors when we think of the three pillars of supportive care – advance care planning, palliative care, hospice services – there are many children who suffer multiple chronic conditions, some of whom are terminal.
OSF Children’s Hospital of Illinois at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center provides pediatric supportive care counseling and bereavement support. This pie chart illustrates of the 433 families who were cared for in this regard that about one-fourth had their child in the Neonatal ICU (NICU), one-fourth were in the Pediatric ICU (PICU) and one-fourth were in the Family Birthing Center.
The counseling and bereavement support are welcomed services by the affected families. If you have questions about this type of support, feel free to contact Laura Sollenberger, Supervisor of the OSF Pediatrics Supportive Care Counsel at (309) 624-9631.

This is great and we have had many of our patients utilize the supportive care team during and after an admission. I only wish this could be extended to reach more families in the ambulatory setting.
