Connections 113: Hospice Services

As we wrap up National Home Care & Hospice Month this week, I’d like to focus on the services that our OSF Hospice teams provide in each of our eight hospital service areas including our newest proposed hospital service area of Kewanee, Illinois.

Caring for a dying loved one is anything but easy, but with hospice services from OSF Home Care, you can surround them with friends and family in the comfort of their own home, nursing home or assisted living facility. Hospice is for patients of all ages with a life-limiting illness, with a prognosis of six months or less to live, who have decided not to pursue curative or life prolonging treatment and instead want to focus on palliative (comfort) care.

The Principles of OSF Hospice

OSF Hospice upholds these basic principles:

  • Commitment to making patients as comfortable as possible
  • Recognition that dying is part of the normal process of living
  • An affirmation and celebration of life that neither hastens nor postpones death

OSF Hospice concentrates on comfort care and quality of life for our end-of-life patients. Our nurses are trained in pain management and symptom control. We include the patient and their family in the care plan and provide physical, emotional and spiritual support during this difficult stage of life. We also provide bereavement care for up to 13 months.
