Heart Calcium Score

Predict your risk of heart disease before you have symptoms. Take a calcium score test — a quick imaging scan of your heart’s arteries. You’ll learn if fat and calcium have built up in the blood vessels, slowing the flow of oxygen to your heart. Your OSF HealthCare doctor can use the information to decide what steps you may need to take to prevent a heart attack.

Where is the scan available?

Calcium score scans are available at many OSF HealthCare diagnostic imaging locations in central and northern Illinois. Your doctor’s office will help you find the most convenient option.

Cost of the Exam

Insurance doesn’t cover this screening, so you’ll need to pay $99 when you arrive for your appointment. The price includes both the scan and a radiologist’s review of your results.

What to Expect

A heart calcium score exam lasts about 10 minutes. During the scan, you:

  • Lie still on a platform that slides into a donut-shaped computed tomography (CT) scanner
  • May need to hold your breath for a few seconds at a time
  • May have small, sticky discs attached to wires (electrodes) on your chest to record your heartbeat

After your appointment, you can return to your normal routine.

Getting Your Results

A cardiologist (heart doctor) will review your exam results. You’ll receive a copy in the mail or in OSF MyChart.
