Katie Willerton, the 2024 OSF Innovator of the Year, endeavored to pilot a smart room using Aiva Health’s AI-powered voice assistant to help hospital patients. Some patients experience a sudden loss of mobility, making voice-activated controls essential for adjusting their environment and communicating with their care team. The tool enhances patient engagement while streamlining clinical workflows, reducing alarm fatigue and improving response times.

Booth #2 - Neuroscience: Digital Neurological Exams

With a growing shortage of neurologists and increasing demand for care, the Digital Neuro Exam tool aims to use AI-powered, objective measurements to support clinical teams in evaluating patients in-person and remotely. This modular platform, which will be accessible via smartphone or tablet, will enhance triage, facilitate earlier detection of neurological changes and integrate seamlessly into clinical workflows.

The tool sits within the EMR to provide clinicians with relevant clinical data insights in a seamless, non-disruptive way. Led by the Clinical Intelligence and Advanced Data Lab, this innovation aims to reduce administrative burden, enhance patient interactions and improve diagnosis accuracy, particularly for underserved populations.

Booth #5 - SEEG 4D: An Open Source SEEG Visualization Tool

SEEG4D revolutionizes epilepsy treatment by integrating multimodal imaging into a dynamic 4D virtual reality model of seizure activity. This open-source software automates electrode contact detection and enhances surgical planning by providing an immersive, time-based visualization of seizure spread. By converting complex diagnostic information into 4D visual representations, SEEG4D facilitaties improved mental representation of seizure onset zone communication between neurosurgeon and epileptologist; potentially leading to more effective surgical outcomes for drug-resistant epilepsy patients.

Booth #8 - Color Me Healthy—Meet Your Care Team

OSF STEAM has created an interactive coloring book designed to help children feel more comfortable with their care team.

Geared toward a 3rd-grade coloring and reading level, the book introduces health careers through the lens of the care team children may encounter during a visit. The final version will include multilingual translations, offering an inclusive and engaging way for young patients to connect with their care team. The coloring book will be distributed in partnership with OSF HealthCare Children’s Hospital of Illinois.

Booth #9 - Pulmonary Acoustic Sensor Telemetry Array 

The Pulmonary Acoustic Sensor Telemetry Array (PASTA) device offers real-time, non-invasive respiratory monitoring to detect deterioration and measure patient response to therapy, even at home. By enabling continuous monitoring, this innovation helps reduce unnecessary hospitalizations, misdiagnosis, and delayed care. With respiratory conditions being the leading cause of hospitalization in children, PASTA meets the growing demand for remote clinical care solutions.

Booth #10 - Rare Disease Discovery

This project addresses the challenges of undiagnosed rare diseases by leveraging machine learning for earlier and more accurate detection. Traditional diagnostic methods depend on clinical expertise, often leading to delays, especially in low-resource areas where genetic testing is less accessible. By analyzing electronic medical records for hidden patterns and mapping relationships between symptoms and conditions, this innovation aims to streamline clinical workflows, reduce time to diagnosis, and ultimately improve patient outcomes.

Booth #11 - FlightPath

FlightPath is advancing traumatic brain injury diagnosis with a self-administered, portable testing modality designed for early detection and improved accuracy. Current diagnostic gaps and lack of care continuity hinder patient outcomes. By standardizing evaluations and integrating data across prehospital, hospital, and long-term care settings, OSF and the University of Illinois aim to enhance precision and intervention strategies. A human subject study at multiple local universities will validate the FlightPath system, refining the application based on user feedback and real-world data collection.

The Intelligent Digital Experience Platform aims to unify fragmented user experiences by integrating a website platform, customer data platform and identity management platform with a personalized content strategy. This initiative enhances patient acquisition, retention and national recognition for OSF HealthCare while improving health outcomes by engaging patients earlier to address potential and existing conditions through data-driven insights.

Booth #13 - Genetic Testing for Familial Hypercholesterolemia 

Familial Hypercholesterolemia is an underdiagnosed genetic disorder that causes high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, leading people to develop heart disease as early as age 30. The pilot seeks to test an algorithm that identifies patients at high risk for the condition using EMR data. Using the data, providers can guide these patients through testing, counseling and ongoing care, while emphasizing the genetic implications for their first-degree relatives.

Booth #14 - From Innovation to Impact: How Connected Care is Changing Heart Failure Management

OSF Ventures invested in Endotronix, an FDA-approved implantable device that enhances heart failure management by providing daily health data. With only 9.1% of heart failure patients receiving optimal therapy, this innovation empowers patients to make informed care decisions and lifestyle changes. Clinical trials show a 49% reduction in heart failure hospitalizations, demonstrating its potential to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.

Booth #15 - Personalized Medicine: CancerIQ

CancerIQ is a digital tool to help identify patients who have an elevated risk of cancer and create a care plan based on patients’ test results. From 2015 to January 2025, the Performance Improvement pilot resulted in 93,995 patients being screened with CancerIQ.

Booth #16 - Unified Patient Platform for Outreach and Coordination

OSF Community Connect (OCC) is a comprehensive platform designed to enhance patient care and outreach. It features a curated patient dashboard to identify at-risk individuals through electronic medical records, outreach mapping for case workers and integrated reporting of patient metrics. With a unified patient database, case management tools and automated patient outreach via text and email, OCC streamlines interventions, tracks decision-making and improves care coordination.

Booth #17 - Providing Peace of Mind for Pediatric Cancer Patients

Port Guard protects the central venous access port for pediatric cancer patients who want to stay active. Designed to prevent damage during contact activities, it fosters a sense of normalcy and inclusion while ensuring patient safety. With prototypes tested, appropriate approvals in place and initial use underway, this solution aims to enhance quality of life and provide peace of mind for families.

Booth #18 - Rapid Access to Cancer Care

The OSF HealthCare Cancer Institute implemented a rapid access model to address delays in cancer diagnosis and treatment by providing a centralized point of contact for patients. Since opening in February 2024, the institute has streamlined the referral process, allowing patients to quickly connect with navigators who gather medical records and coordinate necessary services. This approach has resulted in more efficient scheduling, reduced wait times and improved care coordination.

Booth #19 - Acceptance of Self-Sample HPV Testing Among Medically Underserved Women

This project aims to improve HPV screening accessibility among medically underserved women in Peoria by piloting self-sampling in community settings. Through collaboration with the street medicine program and central lab at OSF HealthCare, the study will provide education, assess patient perceptions and identify barriers to self-sampling. Findings will inform future screening efforts, particularly for rural populations, ensuring more women receive timely HPV detection and follow-up care.

Booth #20 - AI-Assisted Polyp Detection for Colonoscopies

This tool leverages AI to enhance colorectal cancer prevention by improving adenoma detection rates (ADR) during colonoscopies. A successful 2024 pilot of the GI Genius AI-assisted solution demonstrated increased ADR and therapeutic conversions, leading to improved early detection and potential cancer reduction. With strong physician support and proven results, OSF plans to implement this solution Ministrywide in 2025 to elevate patient care and align with industry best practices.

Booth #21 - Reducing Financial Barriers to Cancer Care

To ease the financial burden of cancer treatment, OSF HealthCare implemented TailorMed, a platform that identifies financial assistance opportunities for patients. By accessing over 6,000 resources, including copay support, free drug programs and social assistance, it helps patients afford medications and adhere to treatment plans. With dedicated financial navigators and automated processes, this initiative reduces patient stress and increases patient treatment compliance

Scrubbed In streamlines the GI procedure preparation process to reduce cancellations by 20%. By addressing common barriers like prep misunderstandings, time conflicts, and transportation challenges, this solution uses automation, human-centered design, and personalized patient management to provide clear, timely guidance. The result is a smoother experience for patients and fewer last-minute cancellations.

Booth #23 - OSF Healthflow AI

OSF Healthflow AI is an advanced agentic artificial intelligence (AI) tool designed to accelerate diagnosis and treatment by integrating with electronic medical records. It identifies patients who receive repeated diagnoses without follow-up, may be misdiagnosed or are not responding to treatment. By proactively recognizing these gaps, OSF Healthflow AI facilitates timely referrals to the appropriate facility, ensuring patients receive the right care when they need it.

Booth #24 - Agentic AI in Health Care

OSF Innovation is leveraging agentic artificial intelligence (AI) to improve care coordination, monitoring and adherence for patients with complex medical conditions, particularly cardiovascular issues. Managing vital signs, scheduling specialist appointments and ensuring medication adherence can be overwhelming for patients and caregivers. By integrating AI-powered monitoring, virtual care and appointment coordination into health care provider workflows, this project aims to enhance early detection, improve chronic disease management and reduce caregiver burden, ultimately leading to better health outcomes and a more seamless patient experience.

Booth #25 - Pill Passport

Pill Passport is a personalized, handheld tool designed to simplify medication management after hospital discharge. Created through an OSF Innovation trailblazer challenge, it helps patients and caregivers stay on track with their medications through clear charts, easy pill identification and an erasable pen for updates. By improving adherence, Pill Passport aims to reduce hospital readmissions and support better health outcomes.

Booth #26 - Mindful Medicine: A Stewardship Approach

IllumiCare’s Smart Ribbon, an EMR-agnostic platform, integrates seamlessly with existing systems to guide providers’ decisions without disrupting workflow. A pilot from December 2023 to June 2024 showed significant cost reductions. The platform’s insights led to cancellations of unnecessary orders and a better understanding of provider behaviors, revealing opportunities to enhance care quality and efficiency.

Booth #27 - Virtual Nursing

OSF HealthCare piloted virtual nursing to address nursing shortages and administrative burdens, allowing bedside nurses to focus more on patient care. By using remote nurses for admissions and discharges, the program has reduced patient wait times, improved documentation and enhanced both nurse morale and patient experiences. After a successful pilot, virtual nursing has expanded across multiple hospitals and continues to evolve as OSF explores the best models for broader implementation.

Booth #28 - 4D Heart

OSF HealthCare is home to the only lab in the nation with the capability to automate the creation of 4D beating heart models from retrospectively gated CT scans, dramatically reducing manual effort and improving visualization of complex, dynamic, structural heart defects. By using machine learning for segmentation and automated stitching of iterative, time sequential 3D models, this innovation transforms CT visuals, aids surgical planning and supports further research. Already integrated into clinical workflows, it has influenced surgical decisions and established a new imaging modality.
