Adult Behavioral Health Services

At OSF HealthCare Heart of Mary Medical Center, we offer a comprehensive behavioral health program geared toward adults. The Behavioral Health Unit at OSF Heart of Mary is the area’s only hospital-based inpatient unit. We believe everyone deserves to be treated with respect and compassion, and it drives how we approach care.

Inpatient Treatment

Recovery is unique to each individual. Inpatient care helps stabilize people and prepare them for continued treatment in an outpatient setting. Patients must be at least 18 years of age, be medically stable and have been accepted by a psychiatrist for treatment. Additional criteria for admittance includes evidence of danger to self or others, self-care deficits and mental or emotional deterioration. Our secure, 24-bed unit is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week and offers a quiet environment allowing for privacy and confidentiality. It is located on the hospital’s fifth floor.

We help patients with mental health issues, including:

  • Mood disorders such as acute depression
  • Bipolar disorder (manic depression)
  • Anxiety disorders, including panic attacks and post-traumatic stress
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • Psychosis and schizophrenia

We also offer inpatient and outpatient electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for those in need. Family involvement in the treatment plan is highly encouraged. By creating an individualized plan based on the needs and progress made by the patient during their hospitalization, we are able to help reduce the likelihood of readmission.

Special emphasis is placed on:

  • Individual discharge planning
  • Reintegration into the community
  • Creating a smooth transition into outpatient care
