Pregnant Women with Doctor

Obstetrics Emergency Department

Our Obstetrics Emergency Department (OB ED) offers expecting and new mothers quick, specialized care for urgent situations from 16 weeks pregnant through six weeks postpartum. Staffed by experienced OB nurses and doctors, it is tailored to manage complications swiftly and safely, ensuring appropriate care when it matters most.

What is an OB emergency department?

An OB Emergency Department is a safe, specialized place with maternity-specific triage for pregnancy and postpartum OB emergencies, open 24/7, where you and your baby receive expert, dedicated care when it matters most.

When to Visit the OB Emergency Department

Our OB ED is here to help determine whether what you’re experiencing is a normal part of pregnancy or something that requires medical attention.

If needed, you can be admitted to the Family Birth Center at OSF HealthCare Little Company of Mary Medical Center right away.

What to Expect During Your Visit

When you arrive at the OSF Little Company of Mary registration desk or emergency department, you will be taken to the OB ED, where an OB specialist will evaluate you. We have OB specialists available 24 hours a day to assess your symptoms, check your baby’s heartbeat and order any necessary tests. You may stay for monitoring, receive treatment or be directly admitted to Labor & Delivery. We will contact your OB/GYN and inform them of your situation.

What makes this different from going to a regular ED

An OB emergency department offers specialized, immediate care for pregnancy and postpartum emergencies by experts who focus exclusively on you and your baby. A regular emergency department treats you, but might lack the same level of obstetric expertise or resources. Every treatment suite is equipped with OB-specific equipment and medications.

Around-the-Clock Care for Moms and Babies

The OB ED is open 24/7 for complications from 16 weeks to six weeks postpartum.

Connected to Full Maternity and Newborn Care

The OB ED is located in the Family Birth Center. You’ll receive family-centered care with access to the latest technology in a warm, comfortable setting that includes a Level II neonatal unit, on-site maternal-fetal medicine, lactation consultants,  personalized birthing options with obstetricians and nurse-midwives and much more.
