Pediatric Neurosurgery Clinics

When your child needs neurosurgical care, you want answers, support and a clear plan. At the pediatric neurosurgery clinics at OSF HealthCare Children’s Hospital of Illinois, we care for infants, children and teens with conditions affecting the brain and spine.

Brain Tumor

Brain tumors can affect how a child thinks, moves or feels, and may require surgery as part of their treatment. At your appointment, we review your child’s imaging, discuss symptoms and outline the safest surgical or non-surgical approach. We use advanced tools – including intraoperative MRI – to guide care and coordinate with oncology, neurology and other specialists.

Chiari Malformation

Chiari malformation happens when part of the brain sits lower than normal, which can cause headaches, balance issues or other symptoms. During your visit, we evaluate your child’s imaging, talk through symptoms and determine whether monitoring or surgery is right for them. As a regional referral center, we provide expert, individualized care.

Complex Spine and Spinal Tumors

Children with complex spine conditions or spinal tumors may have back pain, weakness or changes in mobility. We examine your child, review imaging and explain surgical and non-surgical options. Our team works closely with orthopedic, oncology and rehabilitation specialists to create a coordinated treatment plan.

Craniosynostosis

Craniosynostosis happens when one or more of your baby’s skull sutures closed too early, affecting head shape and brain growth. After diagnosis, you’ll meet the neurosurgery team and plastic surgery team who assess your child’s skull development and explain the available surgical options. We guide you through what to expect before, during and after treatment.

Epilepsy

Seizures may cause sudden changes in awareness, movement or behavior. Some children with seizures may benefit from neurosurgical evaluation as part of epilepsy management. We review seizure history, imaging and prior testing to determine whether surgery or continued medical management is appropriate. We work closely with pediatric neurology and epilepsy specialists to support your child’s care.

Head Injury and Concussion

Children with more serious head injuries and concussion symptoms that aren’t getting better – such as ongoing headaches, difficulty returning to school or work, neck pain or dizziness – may need specialized care. During your visit, we assess your child’s symptoms, review imaging and provide clear guidance on activity, recovery and long-term monitoring. Our team helps you understand what to watch for and when to seek more care.
