Diagnostic Follow-Up After Breast Imaging

If your breast imaging results show an area that needs a closer look, it doesn’t automatically mean cancer. Follow-up testing is a normal part of the screening process and helps your provider see a whole picture of your health. OSF HealthCare offers patient-centered breast diagnostic services that combine compassionate guidance, advanced technology and a multidisciplinary care team to help you get answers and peace of mind quickly.

What happens during follow-up testing?

Follow-up testing is designed to be as clear and comfortable as possible. Depending on your results, your provider may recommend additional imaging, such as ultrasound or MRI or a breast biopsy.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Most tests are outpatient, noninvasive and completed quickly
  • Your care team will explain the process and answer your questions beforehand
  • Results are typically available within a few days to a week
  • Any future care will be discussed promptly to keep you informed

You will always know why each test is recommended and what it can tell you.

Understanding Your Results

Follow-up results help your provider determine whether an area is benign or requires further attention.

  • Normal findings: No further testing may be needed, and routine screening continues.
  • Benign conditions: Some findings may need monitoring over time.
  • Suspicious findings: Additional diagnostic tests or biopsy may be recommended.

Your results guide your personalized care plan, whether it’s continued surveillance, treatment or reassurance that your breasts are healthy.

Your Care Team

Your follow-up experience is supported by a multidisciplinary team that works together to provide clear guidance. Your team may include:

  • Radiologists: specialists who interpret your imaging
  • Breast surgeons: experts who evaluate diagnostic findings and provide treatment options
  • Nurses and patient navigators: staff who guide you through appointments, testing and follow-up appointments
  • Primary care providers: your ongoing partner in overall health and preventive care

Our providers focus on clear, focused communication with you to ensure your questions are answered and you always know what to expect next.
