Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

This 136-hour course is designed as a comprehensive introduction to the emergency medical services profession, and the treatment of the sick and injured. In accordance with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Standard Curriculum for the EMT and the Illinois Department of Public Health, this program focuses on honing the knowledge, skills and abilities that will allow students to properly assess patients and treat a wide variety of medical and trauma emergencies in the pre-hospital setting. Additional course requirements include 25 hours Emergency Department Clinical with a minimum of 15 patient contacts and 15 hours Ambulance Field Clinical with a minimum of 5 patient contacts.

  • Personal protection strategies.

This course is taught to prepare students to successfully challenge the National Registry Examination for the EMT Certification Examination. Upon successful completion of the NREMT EMT Cognitive Examination, EMT Students may then apply for State EMT Licensure.

Prerequisites

  • Complete Education Course Application with all specific course requirements as indicated on the course application.
  • Appropriate course fee paid prior to start date of class.
  • Must be 18 years of age by the final course examination date. Students age 17 may apply and will require written parental consent to attend the EMT Course. Please contact the EMS Training Supervisor for further information.
  • High School Diploma or its equivalency.
  • Background check
  • Drug screen
  • Immunizations (Hepatitis B, MMR, Varicella, Tdap, Influenza, COVID-19, 2-step TB Skin Test)

Course Offerings

OSF Northern Region EMS offers Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) classes throughout the year at various locations. OSF Northern Region EMS hosts classes at the OSF Northern Region EMS West State Training Facility, 3501 W. State St, Rockford at different times during the year.

An accelerated day class is offered during the summer at the OSF Northern Region EMS Office to accommodate college students during the summer break. 2024 Summer EMT Course at OSF EMS Training Facility, Rockford

  • The Summer EMT Course will be held June 3, 2024 - August 2, 2024 at the OSF NREMS EMS Training Facility, 3501 West State Street, Rockford, IL 61102.
  • Course days are Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays 8:30am – 2:30pm
  • Course days June 3rd through June 13th only are Mondays, Wednesdays & Thursdays
  • Class size is limited to 15 students
  • Application packets are currently available
  • Applications are due by 5:00 pm May 15, 2024
