Emergency Medicine

Dr. Lisa Barker with baby in Emergency Department OSF Children’s Hospital of Illinois is now home to the first state designated Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center in downstate Illinois. The Level 1 distinction is the highest ranking of its kind that a hospital can attain and recognizes centers that provide optimal care.

This state-of-the-art Emergency Department (ED) opened in 2010, and was designed to promote patient privacy and healing while incorporating many family-centered care features. All exam rooms are private, and will only unlock with the swipe of a key card given to parents at check-in. Rooms also have separate doors for visitors and medical staff to ensure patient safety. We have separate patient areas from medical staff work areas to create a more peaceful environment. Special design considerations were given to our young patients and their caregivers. Our highly-trained staff include not only nurses, nurse practitioners and physicians who have pediatric training and protocols but also pharmacy staff located in the ED to assist with medication dosing for our young patients.

We have incorporated  Child Life  specialists into the ED to use play, education and other age-appropriate activities to cope with stress of being in the hospital. The goal is to create a child-friendly culture that provides specialized medical care for our youngest patients.
