Inpatient School Program

When your child is in the hospital, your routine can feel disrupted. At OSF HealthCare Children’s Hospital of Illinois, we’re here to make your child’s experience feel as normal as possible, including helping them keep up with schoolwork if they are able.

Our inpatient school program helps students in the hospital focus on learning, while we focus on getting them better.

How Our School Program Works

Your child’s education will be supported by certified teachers and trained tutors from the moment they are admitted to the hospital. With your approval, our team will contact your child’s school to get any assignments and learning materials. We can also help your child with:

  • Tutoring, either at the bedside or in the classroom located on the unit
  • Getting supplies and materials like pencils, graph paper, notebooks, calculators and Chromebooks
  • Returning completed work to your child’s teacher
  • Advocating for needed adjustments in assignments or due dates

We also keep young minds active by offering educational games, a selection of fiction and nonfiction books, science demonstrations, art projects and more.

Volunteer Opportunities

Our young patients benefit from a team of volunteers who donate 3-6 hours each week to support the inpatient school program. They bring a wide range of skills to the tutoring program, from teaching to health care.

If you know someone who is interested in volunteering, please contact us at (309) 655-2118.
