  • How long does the surgery take?

  • Gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy surgeries typically require 2-3 hours in the operating room. Learn about this procedure by going to www.rush.edu/bariatric.

  • How long is the hospital stay?

  • Gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy surgeries usually require 2 days in the hospital.

  • How soon can I get out of bed?

  • It is expected that you sit up in a chair within 4 hours after surgery and begin taking several walks the next day. After you leave the hospital you will be able to care for all your personal needs, but will need help with transportation.

  • How soon can I drive?

  • We recommend you wait a minimum of 2 weeks after surgery before driving. You must have stopped taking any narcotic medication and be able to safely and alertly drive your car.

  • When can I return to work?

  • Within 1 to 6 weeks depending on the amount of physical activity your job requires.

  • What non-surgical complications are associated with Gastric Bypass?

  • Hair loss, vomiting, intolerance to some foods, vitamin and mineral deficiency are some of the complications. All of these side effects can be resolved or avoided by taking multivitamins daily and by following a good nutrition plan and careful eating.

  • Does your bariatric program strictly adhere to rules for patient selection?

  • Yes. Before any surgery is considered, our experts evaluate each patient and make determinations for surgery based on their weight, health, diet, history of attempted weight loss, commitment and psychological factors as determined by the American Society of Bariatric Surgery. All patients must go through this multidisciplinary approach.
