Elekta Synergy® System and Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy is one of the safest and most effective ways to treat cancer today. In fact, more than half of all cancer patients are treated with radiation, either alone or in combination with other therapies. A linear accelerator is a medical device, that can rotate around the patient and generate various energies of x-rays and electron beams for radiation therapy treatment. Elekta Synergy® system was the first linear accelerator to bring 3D image guidance into the treatment set up process.

Patient receiving imaging using linear accelerator The accelerator's state-of-the-art technology enables OSF Little Company of Mary's radiation oncologists to obtain images just before treatment with the patient in the exact position he or she will be treated in. This ensures treatments are verified by 3D imaging before radiation is delivered.

The image-guided procedure allows the physician to precisely pinpoint the delivery of radiation therapy to the tumor while sparing healthy tissues.  This provides the capability to deliver higher doses of radiation therapy more accurately for aggressive treatments to improve the chances of controlling the cancer.

Its built-in safety measures monitor the radiation delivery, improving the accuracy and safety of the doses delivered. This technology offers unparalleled safety and effectiveness in treatment delivery.
