OSF Saint Francis Medical Center

Peoria, Illinois

Awards & Certifications

OSF Saint Francis is the only area hospital to be designated a Magnet® hospital five times and only the 55th hospital to achieve that status. Only 55 hospitals in the United States have achieved a fifth designation and this represents 0.85% of U.S. hospitals. The Magnet Recognition Program® recognizes excellence in nursing from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).  The Magnet Recognition Program® is widely accepted as the gold standard of patient care, recognizing excellence and professionalism in nursing with designated facilities maintaining rigorous standards. Research shows that Magnet® hospitals are more effective at attracting and keeping quality nurses.

During the extensive re-designation process, documents must first be submitted and accepted by the ANCC. In 2023, OSF Saint Francis’ were accepted on first submission, followed by a nearly week-long site visit by a Magnet Recognition credentialing team which clarifies and verifies the information. The team then amplifies what is submitted – seeing what an organization does even better than indicated in initial documents.

OSF Saint Francis first achieved this honor in 2005, 2009, 2013, 2017 and 2023. The Magnet designation is valid for four (4) years.

Magnet Prize

OSF Saint Francis is the 2019 winner of the Magnet Prize, presented to one hospital in the United States by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

The Magnet Prize is awarded to the health care organization that best exemplifies “leading-edge research, practices, services, technologies, programs or other exemplary innovations designed to increase the knowledge base of support for patient care and nursing excellence and to demonstrate positive outcomes.”

In 2014, OSF Saint Francis nurses began working on a project to reduce food insecurity and improve health in the most impoverished areas of the hospital’s service area. Their efforts – which led to the development of our Care-A-Van and Faith Community Nursing programs, as well as community gardens, nutrition education and building residents’ trust – spurred a dramatic drop in non-emergency visits to the hospital emergency department.

The prize comes with a $50,000 grant, underwritten by health care information technology supplier Cerner, to further develop the innovative project.

Joint Commission

OSF Saint Francis Medical Center has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Hospital Accreditation by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. The Gold Seal is a symbol of quality that reflects a health care organization’s commitment to providing safe and quality patient care

OSF Saint Francis Medical Center has been recognized as a Gold level Illinois Healthy Worksite, the highest level achievable. OSF is just one of 44 organizations from around the State to have qualified for the award.

The Illinois Healthy Worksite designation was created in 2014 to engage workplaces in healthy practices that benefit the employer, employees and communities. The program is administered nationally by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and locally by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

This designation, awarded in June 2015, is in place for three years before an organization has to reapply.
