Diagnostic Radiology
Radiology is the oldest form of imaging, using small amounts of radiation to produce images from within the body. OSF St. Joseph Medical Center offers general radiography procedures including x-rays of the chest, abdomen, spine and extremities. Computerized Radiology (CR) system is completely filmless and allows the technologist to take your x-rays and transmit them directly to the Radiologist via the computer. This technology also allows your physician to see your images on a computer in his/her office.
Specialized exams are also done in our radiology department. These exams are performed using fluoroscopy and a type of "contrast." A radiologist administers barium to visualize the intestines (UGI or colon). They also supervise an injection of iodinated contrast to view the urinary system (IVP), or inject joints such as the shoulder (arthrogram). OSF St. Joseph Medical Center also offers many other specialty radiology exams for which specific information is provided to the patient at the time of scheduling.
