Meet the Surgeon
Vafa Shayani, MD, FACS
Dr. Shayani is a leading weight loss surgeon in Illinois with a history of leadership in his field. He performed his first gastric bypass in 1999 and his first lap band surgery in 2001.
He was also the first surgeon in Illinois to implant two separate types of gastric weight loss balloons, a hunger control device, and the Aspire Assist device.
Dr. Shayani takes a patient-centered approach to care. His experience with a variety of procedures provides patients with options to decide on what will fit their needs best.
“It is important to allow time for the information to sink in before patients make a decision,” he says. “I urge patients to leave the office, and take ample time before deciding on a major life-altering step in the right direction.”
Dr. Shayani comes from a family of health care professionals. He was born in Tehran, Iran and moved with his family to Los Angeles when he was 15.
He received his medical degree from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where he also performed his residency. Then he moved to Illinois, where he practiced for more than 10 years at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago, and served as the director of Minimally Invasive Surgery.
He loves living in the Midwest, and he enjoys the ability to make a positive impact on the lives of his patients.
“Bariatric surgery is one of the most rewarding fields in medicine,” Dr. Shayani says. “I consider myself blessed.”
He is a married father of two grown children. His son is a math whiz and a graduate of Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, while his daughter is a soccer player attending Northeastern University in Boston.
He is an active member of his synagogue, where he has served as president of his congregation twice. He is a professed sports fan and enjoys a good movie with his wife. The couple loves traveling to warm bodies of water when work permits.
